The Flying Point Foundation was founded in the fall 2008 by Kim Covell. The parent of a son with autism, Kim started the FPF for the purpose of creating and supporting activities that will enrich the lives of children with autism.
The foundation started with a short-term goal of starting a one-week summer day camp for children with autism, along with their typically developing siblings and peers. That goal was attained in August 2010 and in 2011 the camp session was extended to eight days with expanded enrollment.
In February 2011, the foundation offered a one-week winter break program and in April the very first respite night at the Children's Museum of the East End (CMEE).
In December 2011, an anonymous grant was used to purchased iPads that will be used in the camp and respite programs.
The first scholarship for a graduating high school senior with autism who will be attending college or vocational school will be made available in 2012.
Additional goals include supporting other services in accordance with the foundation's mission.
